Understanding Your Pools PH

Your Ph in Your pool should be tested weekly using a test kit. We recommend a #taylor test kit for the most accuracy rather than test strips. This can be measured by simply adding a few color matching drops to your specified kit. Your Ph Will Than represent whether your water is considered acidic or base. We want to be between 7.4-7.8. Anything less than 7.4 your water will be acidic and anything higher than 7.8 the water will be to base or alkaline.

PH Affect On Chlorine

Ph To High?

When Your water is Too Alkaline (above 7.8 PH) You risk Algae blooms, Scaling and ineffectiveness of your #chlorine properly sanitizing your pool bacteria. Algae loves to breed in any Ph above 7.6 and that is why most green pools will have a high Ph. Scaling will also develop and can cause a slimy feel and cloudy water. The most effective way to lower Ph is With the use of #Muriatic Acid 31.45%. Average Usage is about a quart a week depending on your pool size and gallonage. Take Safety Precautions while using muriatic acid!

Ph To Low?

When your ph is to low (lower than 7.4) this is even worse. Your pool water now has become corrosive! This can Eat away seals, plumbing, hardware and plaster. Now that your water is acidic it quickly eats and destroys any chlorine you add to your pool making it ineffective which in return can also lead to an algae bloom. If you test your chlorine levels you will notice no matter how much you shock your pool it will not hold chlorine. Algae can on some cases even survive in acidic water if no chlorine is present. An Acidic pool can eat away and etch any beautiful shiny stainless metal like railings and ladders. Most of the time I see a client's pool too Acidic because they use a lot of chlorine tablets. Most Clients are unaware that tablets contain Acid! Cyanuric Acid In tablets will gradually over the course of time bring down the ph without the use of a buffer like soda ash or #sodium #bicarbonate. To Bring Your Ph Up Use a Product Like soda ash that raises your alkalinity and ph at the same time if necessary. Soda ash is measured in pounds and added to your pool depending on your gallonage in a granular form.
